Test Locs

So after doing tons of research and completely admiring so many beautiful women with sisterlocks, I have decided to start my own sisterlock journey. I am scheduled for my installation on Friday and Saturday November 23th and 24th. Funny how I said that I would never lock my hair. Maybe because I have always had a negative view of "dreadlocks". Heck, it took me this long to even consider going natural. It is interesting that the guy that used to do my hair when it was permed was the one who told me he was no longer going to put a relaxer in my head. He started flat ironing my hair and at the time I was working out pretty regularly and going to the gym with natural roots and relaxed ends was not pretty. So I started wearing braids, wigs, and kinky twists and the rest is history. I stopped relaxing my hair in the fall of 2006, and I did the BIG CHOP on March 30, 2007.

Here are some pics before the realization that I didn't have to perm my hair. I was another one who felt like her hair had to be straight in order to be considered "well kept".
One of my old favorites : 1/2 Wig

Kinky Twists Microbraids

Someone please remind me again why I would sit for 12 hours straight to have this done to myself, only to have to get them redone every 6-8 weeks!!!

The things we do to look good...LOL

Now I could act like cutting my perm out was the most liberating experience of my life, but I hated it.....well at least initially. I came home and cried to my husband saying that I looked like a boy with girly earrings on :-( Thank God I have a supportive husband!! Be he assured me that I looked fine. I went to a natural hair care stylist who performed the "BC" and she styled what hair I had left with comb coils. It had a hard time looking at myself in the mirror. But after about a whooping 2 days I fell in love with myself. It was me!! Finally, no weaves, no extensions, no creamy crack, just me!! That is when I felt liberated. I had so many people give me compliments. I only had a handful to ask "why did you cut all your hair off". So that definitely helped.

But one thing I needed to realize was that my validation in who I am and how I look is not in other people. I'm so thankful that I made that decision. And God had to work on me to realize that I am only validated in Him. That how he views me and my hair will reflect in who I am and will have nothing to do with how my hair looks. LIBERATION LADIES!!! The Creator of the ends of the earth loves me, and loves my hair! This is how he created me. No need to be something that I am not. I never thought I would have a spiritual experience with my hair, but I am learning a lot as I go through this process.

Okay, so I'm really about to get personal. Well personal at least in my own mind. I have been thinning at the crown of my head for a while now. It seems to be getting worse. So since there is nothing impossible for God, I am literally praying that my hair grows back. So I am going to include pictures so you can see just how bad it is. I am getting locked by a sisterlock consultant trainee so I hope everything will go well. I have expressed my concerns to her and hopefully I will be able to cover that spot somewhat. One of the biggest concerns that I have read about is the "scalpiness effect" as I call it. So this is going to be an emotional time for me I can already tell. But hopefully you all will help me get through it. But here goes...

I know the question might be asked, "have you seen a dermatologist?" I have not, which is what I need to do. To be honest, I have been afraid and I have been avoiding it. So I may need a little more encouragement to get there. I just don't want to hear that I have permanent hair loss. And to think it could have been caused by years of damaging chemicals and tension of weaves. Hindsight is always 20/20.

I did the Big Chop in October after sporting shoulder length relaxed hair for many years. I got my last relaxer in Apr 2006 and wor braided styles. I too was unsure of the TWA for many days afterwards, but now am very comfortable with it and me. Your comb coil twists looked too cute.

I get locked this Friday and Saturday too! So I guess that we will be in this together. I am worried about the scalpiness also. Que sera sera!

Please keep me posted on your journey, you can see mine on my blog.

Thanks for leaving a note on my blog. Wow, your consultant put in quite a few test locks. I can't wait to see your sisterlocks once they have been put in. Keep documeneting your journey, you will find that your personal insight will help others in doing their sisterlocks research.

Hey kwamrs, thanks for stopping by. I just added you to my bloglines last night... I didn't even notice that you're in Orlando. Don't worry about the thinning areas, I've seen a lot of blogs and fotki albums and you'd be amazed at how well they fill in after a relatively short period of time. Good luck on your installation, I'll check in when you post pics but I'm sure they'll be fabulous.

oo-oop!
I'm adding you to my bloglist. My heart reaches out to you on the thinning. I have a lot of thinning on the sides near my ears, I notice hairline is getting weaker...some of it is genetic. But some of it can be helped. Some people actually get new growth after getting locks. But since you are chemical free, there may be things that can help...diet, even Rogaine. My hair really reacts to stress too.
Don't be too worried about working with a trainee. Just be patient. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
The first two weeks I looked a little scraggly, so don't be surprised when you first get out of the chair. Check that your parts are symmetrical, shaped like squares, not rectangles. Make sure you have a center part from front to back, straight side parts...for styling.
And most important....post lots of pictures!!!

Something I've always wished I did was the big chop. I wore my hair in braid extensions for about a year and then cut off the perm which left me with a nice length. I think you wear short hair very well.

As for the scalpiness...don't worry about it. I know it's easier said than done but before you know it your hair is growing and your scalp is filling in. I've been locked almost 1.5 years and I still see massive scalp after a retightening.

I also have thinning around my edges from perming and braid extensions and I think my edges are getting better.

A couple things you should think about with hair loss. Is it stress? Is it health related? Is it genetic? Is it damage from perms and/or hair weaves? The most important thing for you to do is to take care of yourself by eating properly, keeping your stress levels down and staying happy. I know that MSM and Evening Primrose Oil are good supplements for the hair as well.

Sorry to keep rambling but I think you'll be fine. Can't wait to see your install pics cause your test locks look good.

Wow...I can't wait to see your locks. There are very few blogs I read through because of time, but I am really enjoying both of your blogs.

BTW- My best friend has the same hair loss you do in the same area...I told her that my loctician said that Sisterlocks will help grow her hair back, but she hasn't made a definite decision on whether she wants locks, but she did start wearing her hair natural....so talk to your loctician and see what she says.

Stay encouraged!

Hi Chelsea,
Girl,
I just looked at the picture your posted with your balding patern. Well the top of my head looks the same. I have seem several dermatolgists. As I look at the texture of your hair we might have similar hair. Anywho, I had a natural (no perm) for 14 years and went back to a perm two years ago. Long story. But I'd suggest you look into DHT Blocker Moleculizing Root Lifter by groganics. You may have female androgenetic alopecia (female pattern balding) which essentailly is due to hormone levels causing DHT hormones to thin the top of head. The balding starts onto and in the back. Spraying that blocker slows the thinning down. Also braids pull out the hair folicals with androgenetic alopecia so be careful with the tightnings. I had braids 20 years ago in 1988 and my hair was longer but thinner with hair holes. This year I discovered that alopecia problem so I had no idea I was accelerating the hair balding. Anyway, google it and look into it. You may be able to preserve more of your hair than I have been able too. I used to have thick hair, but it's thin now. Over the 14 years of wearing my hair natural it continued to get thin. When I dicovered the that it was high DHT level basically distroying the folicals I understand why now. If you have furhter questions feel free to send me an email at rstacie08@yahoo.com. Good Luck. Stacie
